Taunton Student Feature - Nicole S.

We often hear the term "non-traditional" used to describe students who did not pursue their degree right out of high school. Well, nontraditional students aren't so nontraditional anymore. Roughly 71 percent of all U.S. undergraduates defy the college-student stereotype, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Nicole Silva, a Business Management major at our Taunton campus, is one of these students.  As a full-time working mother of one, Nicole is a true example of how you can make time for your education if it's something you really want.

Her biggest obstacle was taking the first step, but credits the support she received from the Taunton campus staff to her ultimate decision and ongoing success.

"Once I took that first step, everything fell in to place like they said it would. Work, personal life...the confidence I gained from going back to school changed everything," explains Nicole.

After attending classes at other local, larger institutions, Nicole finds Bay State to be a place that's both comfortable and inspiring.

"A lot of the students here can relate to each other," she says. "We have family, work, and other commitments, but working towards this common goal is something that brings us together."

Currently, Nicole works full-time at New England Community Services in Dorchester, MA working with at-risk youth, and supporting the organization's life coaches.  Her ultimate dream is to combine her love for helping others with her ambitions to own her own business.

With her drive, dedication, and positive attitude, we certainly wouldn't bet against her!
