Service Learning Trip to London – Learning Foreign Justice System Policy
In just a few days, students from Bay State College’s Restorative Justice Class will take part in the College’s second Service Learning trip overseas. This year, the group will be heading to London to learn and experience first-hand how another country’s justice system is being run.
The trip will include visits to Women in Prison, an organization that supports and campaigns for women that have been affected by the criminal justice system. They educate and train policy makers about women in the system and promote alternatives to custody.
Students will also spend time at the Haven Centre (Camberwell), which provides support for those who have been raped or sexually assaulted. They will meet with local police and receive an overview of the rape and sexual assault cases in the area, and what happens to those that are found guilty in the criminal justice system.
"With only days left until London, my classmates and I are almost ready to head out,” says student Katherine Irizarry. “We’ve been working on some fundraising and individual service learning projects researching the difference in criminal justice systems around the world. We are also learning about different organizations that we will be working with overseas. I’m excited to see what London has in store for us!"
The group, led by the Chair of the Criminal Justice program, Dr. William Morrissette, will be sending us their reactions and sharing what they learn throughout the trip. Check back in to see what they’re up to!
