Remembering the Boston Marathon Bombings One Year Later
It was a year ago today that we geared up for one of our favorite days in the city of Boston, Patriot’s Day. Marathon Monday.
It was a year ago today that our students and neighbors and friends lined the streets cheering as 30,000 men and women took on the 26.2 mile journey from Hopkinton to Copley Square.
And it was a year ago today that just blocks from where we call home, two bombs went off changing our lives and city forever.
Though our hearts still break for everyone affected by this senseless tragedy, it is important to look back on this day one year later and remember how it brought the city together; brought out the good in people.
Almost immediately after the bombing, a makeshift memorial began to take shape, first at the police barricade at the intersection of Boylston and Berkeley Streets and later at Copley Square. People from across the globe left flowers, posters, notes, t-shirts, hats, tokens of all shapes and sizes, and—most significantly—running shoes.
To mark the one year anniversary, a selection of items from the memorial collection will be displayed at the Boston Public Library in an exhibit called Dear Boston. We encourage everyone to take some time and visit.
