Nursing Alum Success at Boston Children's Hospital

By now, we all know how important the nursing profession is.  Nurses are at the front lines of healthcare, providing physical and emotional support when we need it the most.

2014 Bay State College Nursing graduate, Daksha Dumornay, always knew she wanted to become a nurse.  Daksha was a premature baby herself, and spent some time visiting Boston Children’s Hospital as she was growing up.  Even from a young age, she knew the profession was for her.

Before attending Bay State College, Daksha got her foot in the door of Boston Children’s Hospital by working as a Secretary and then as a Clinical Assistant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  She enrolled at Bay State in 2012 and was dedicated to maintaining her full-time job and going to school full-time. 

“You have to have the drive and determination,” she says.  “It definitely gets hard and people get discouraged, but if you stick to it, work hard, and keep the end goal in mind, it will fly by. And it’s so worth it.”

As a medical hub, Boston's hospitals are renowned as being among the country's best. In fact, Boston Children's Hospital was ranked #1 children’s hospital this past year by U.S. News & World Report.  Because of this, Daksha and her colleagues not only see premature babies, but also chronically sick children.

Despite the sadness that comes along with caring for these babies, there’s also that knowledge that your background and skills are helping to improve their lives.  Daksha finds real satisfaction in that.

“It’s only been just over a year and I’ve already had patients that have come back to visit and thank us for the care we provide.  It’s very rewarding.”

Daksha is about to return to the classroom to pursue her master’s in Nursing.  We are so proud of her success!
