Entertainment Management Student Recognized for Service Learning

Last week, at the day division Honors Ceremony, Bay State College handed out its first ever Service Learning Award for leadership excellence in a service learning project. 

The award was presented to Heather Devine for her efforts in the semester-long service learning project put on by the Entertainment Management program.  The program’s Event Management class produced a benefit concert at the Brighton Music Hall in which all proceeds went to The Life is Good Kids Foundation. 

“Heather stood out to me as someone who deserved this award,” says Professor Jess White. “She was consistently putting in extra effort to make this event a success, and showed that she understood the importance of social responsibility within the industry.”

Along with the honors certificate, Heather was also awarded a $1,000 scholarship towards next year’s tuition.  The scholarship is something Bay State College hopes to award to one student per year in honor of their commitment to Service Learning.

Service learning at Bay State College is an educational process in which students collaborate with faculty to identify individualized learning objectives that foster social responsibility through self-directed action and guided reflection.

The faculty and students at Bay State College work with community organizations to design collaborative projects that address community issues and that allow students to develop and apply academic and critical thinking skills.

Service-learning experiences and structured reflection provide students with the opportunity to make connections between academic course content and community issues, in the broader context of civic engagement. Service-learning also facilitates the exchange of ideas, knowledge and resources between Bay State College and the local community, the New England area, and beyond.
