Service Learning at Bay State College
What is Service Learning?
Service learning at Bay State College is an educational process in which students collaborate with faculty to develop learning objectives that foster social responsibility and promote civic engagement through community service and guided reflection.
The faculty and students at Bay State College work with community organizations to design collaborative projects that address community issues and that allow students to develop and apply academic and critical thinking skills.
Service learning experiences and structured reflection provide students with the opportunity to make connections between academic course content and community issues, in the broader context of civic engagement. Service learning also facilitates the exchange of ideas, knowledge and resources between Bay State College and the local community, the New England area, and beyond.

- Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program: Bay State College Criminal Justice students and incarcerated students at the Boston Pre-Release Center and Plymouth County Correctional Facility came together to take a college course, meant to foster a deeper understanding between these two populations. - Business Services for Local Organizations: Bay State College Management students used their business knowledge and experience to help create strategic business plans for local organizations without the resources to do so themselves. Read participant Joy's story.
- Non-Textile Sustainable Fashion Design: Bay State College Fashion students repurposed discarded commercial materials from restaurants and stores at the Northshore Mall into sustainable, wearable garments. Read participant Hannah's story and participant Laurie's story.
- Trans-Pacific Partnership Debate: Bay State College Fashion students debated and distributed information about the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal during this year's presidential election. Read participant Sam's story.
- Green Eileen: Recycling for a Cause: Bay State College Fashion students designed original garments from gently used Eileen Fisher clothing in partnership with their Green Eileen division. Read participant Chavon's story.
- Physical Therapy Workshops for At-Risk Populations: Bay State College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students conducted workshops to specific populations at risk for physical injuries. Read participant Lisa's story and participants Sammi, Kaitlin and Alison's story.
- Children's Creative Arts Workshop: Bay State College Entertainment Management students ran a children's event focused on self-expression through art and donated the proceeds to Zumix, a local nonprofit arts organization. Read participant Tita's story here.
