Bay State College Students to Take Part In Habitat for Humanity Trip

Ten students and two staff members from Bay State College will be spending their spring break in Winston-Salem, NC building houses through Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge program.
From Monday, March 5th to Saturday, March 10th, 2012 students will work with Forsyth County Habitat for Humanity to complete their 300th home by the end of 2012. Thus far, the organization has served more than 1,000 family members.
There are many substandard housing areas in the community. Rather than simply building homes, Habitat Forsyth has started rebuilding neighborhoods. These families who are recipients will be placed in their home based on their housing needs, ability to pay a mortgage, and willingness to partner with Forsyth County Habitat for Humanity.
In addition to donating their time and energy to help build these houses, Bay State College students have been spending countless hours working to meet their fundraising goal of $4,000. The money will fund their travel expenses and the remainder will go directly to the Forsyth County Habitat for Humanity to build the homes they are constructing as well as future homes in the area.
Collegiate Challenge is a year-round school break program, coordinated through the Collegiate Challenge Team at Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, GA. More than 14,000 students from more than 700 colleges, universities and high schools will work at more than 200 sites nationwide for Collegiate Challenge. Collectively, these students have pledged more than $ 1 million for the affiliates they are working with.
Students are helping themselves and the local community as they help others build new homes, new hope and new lives. The majority of students involved with the Collegiate Challenge program are active members of the Student Government Association, Community O’s, Campus Activities Board, Criminal Justice Society, MEISA, Residence Hall Association, and are even Resident Assistants. This program allows students the opportunity to bring back skills, experiences and enthusiasm to share with the rest of their affiliates.
