Bay State College students to compete nationwide in world’s fastest growing sport

BOSTON, MA, November 28, 2018 – Bay State College recently announced it will become the first institution in Massachusetts to join the growing esports space and National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) with the intent to compete next fall.

Esports refers to the popular and rapidly growing field of competitive video gaming. The addition of an esports program is intended to promote a holistic approach to the college experience, while attracting students who possess skills including critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork, which are transferable to success in the classroom and after graduation.

“There is certainly a demand for esports among prospective students and we are excited to be able to offer this experience to future students,” said Bay State College Vice President of Admissions Richard McCarthy. “Esports will add excitement to our campus community. With the hiring of new coaches and the building of a competition area, we are thankful for the commitment Bay State College is making to our first varsity sport.”

In partnership with NACE, Bay State College has begun a national search for a full-time coach to start competing in the Fall 2019 semester. As a part of its recruiting effort, Bay State College will offer athletic scholarships—making esports the college’s first varsity sport competing in some of the most popular esports games around the world, such as League of Legends and Overwatch.

“Our goal is to sponsor esports programs on campuses with the same level of attention and support given to traditional athletics,” said Michael Brooks, Executive Director of NACE. “We’re excited to have Bay State College join our roster as we continue to grow this program to offer students the opportunity to compete and engage with one another.”

“We are committed to making a large investment in the launch of this varsity team, while increasing esports exposure to our region,” added McCarthy.
